Empowering the Future of E-Repair: CREEC Transforming the Industry Beyond Repairs

In the last week, we successfully concluded an impactful e-repair and maintenance training program in Kampala. In partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development, and with funding from UKAid and MECS, we equipped young people with the skills they need to revolutionize the repair industry. Beyond technical expertise, our training emphasized customer service excellence, helping participants understand how to go beyond simple repairs and truly satisfy customer needs. We also explored the role of technology in reshaping business, demonstrating how online advertising, digital customer engagement, and trust-building strategies can elevate their businesses to new heights.

After seven successful cohorts, we proudly boast a network of 150 trained professionals across the Kampala Metropolitan area. Many participants hail from Kawempe, Rubaga Division, and Nakawa, with the majority engaged in the repair of various appliances and accessories. Our approach has been both skill-enhancing and inclusive, with nearly 40% of participants being women, and representation across different age groups. With a strong focus on youth empowerment, this initiative is creating sustainable livelihoods and transforming Uganda’s repair industry.

One of the key outcomes of this training has been raising awareness about energy-efficient appliances. Many participants were accustomed to repairing conventional household items such as hot plates, but through our program, they gained exposure to modern, energy-saving alternatives. Practical, hands-on sessions introduced participants to e-cooking technologies, including electric pressure cookers and air fryers. By integrating energy efficiency into their daily work, these repair professionals are playing a key role in promoting sustainable solutions for Ugandan households.

At CREEC, our mission is to increase access to modern energy solutions, and this training aligns perfectly with that vision. It also supports Uganda’s National Development Plan III, which emphasizes sustainable development, with e-cooking as a key initiative.

While the training was a resounding success, it was not without its challenges. One of the biggest hurdles was convincing participants to step away from their businesses for the duration of the sessions. To enhance understanding, we also ensured that key concepts were delivered in the local language, making the training more accessible and impactful. From Nansana to Wakiso and Entebbe, we are witnessing a transformation in how repair professionals approach their craft. As we continue to expand this initiative, we remain committed to empowering young entrepreneurs with the knowledge, skills, and tools they need to not only repair but to innovate, build trust, and create a sustainable future for the industry.
