In a bid to create awareness and educate communities about biogas technology and its benefits to communities, the Centre organised an open day meeting at Karambi Secondary School in Bwera sub region of Kasese District on Wednesday 17th October as part of the SENRMCAM (Strengthening Sustainable Environment and Natural Resource Management, Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation in Uganda) project.
The meeting that targeted community leaders marked the beginning of awareness creation efforts aimed at sensitizing institutions and local communities about biogas technology in addition to a biogas system that is currently being constructed at Karambi SS.
During the meeting, Mr Vianney Tumwesige, a 2011 award winning World Wide Fund Young Environment Achiever and CREEC’s biogas technician educated participants about biogas, how it works, benefits of using the technology and challenges people face in implementing the technology.
Participants in the meeting had a chance to interact with the technician through a question and answer session. In addition, Mr. Muthembele Wilson, the MC for the meeting and deputy head master acted as an interpreter to Rukonzo, a commonly used dialect by the people of the community. After the meeting, the team visited the biogas construction site to have a clearer picture of how the biogas system will look like.
Mr. Mbusa David, the guest of honour at the meeting and Chairman of the Board of Governors of Karambi SS thanked all the partners behind the project for all that they have done for Karmbi community and Kasese district as a whole.
Karambi open day biogas meeting included headmasters of Karambi SS, Kitholu SS, LC1s of villages like Karambi Village, Mpondwe, Kitalikibi, Bwera trading centre, police and prisons heads’ representatives, women groups’ representatives, regional inspectors of primary schools among many others. Besides the Biogas Technician, the CREEC team was represented by Rehema Namukose, the Public Relations Specialist and Lorrene Harroff, a Volunteer from USA.
The SENRMCAM is a Government of Uganda project that is being implemented by WWF Uganda Country Office and is funded by UNDP Uganda Country Office. The biogas component of this project is being implemented by CREEC.
Karambi SS is one of first implementation sites that were selected under the project. The four most suitable sites, Karambi inclusive were selected after a baseline study was carried in 55 schools in Kasese district and the Mt. Elgon region.
