About Us

The Centre for Research in Energy and Energy Conservation (CREEC) is a not-for-profit organization based at-Makerere University in Kampala. We play a big role in influencing change from traditional forms of energy to sustainable and clean forms of energy.

We do this through actionable research, renewable energy product testing, trainings, consultancy and innovation. Our dynamic centre has achieved many milestones in this area by giving methodological, technical and well researched approaches in the thematic areas of rural electrification, energy for productive use, energy efficiency, household energy, energy entrepreneurship and energy testing.

Our centre was founded in 2001 by Dr. Izael Pereira da Silva and obtained the status of project under the Dean of the former Faculty of Technology. For practical reasons we were legally registered in 2010 as a company limited by guarantee without share capital. With a mission to enhance access to modern types of energy, we have for the last 20 years worked with government organizations, donors, private sector, individuals and academia to provide innovative programs, technical expertise through capacity building activities providing business support, knowledge sharing and advisory nationally, regionally and globally.

Through our partnerships with government we have stood out as a key contributor to standards and quality assurance for renewable energy products like improved cookstoves and solar PV products. Our two testing facilities are recognized under the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) in accordance with the ISO 17025 quality management system. Over 150 renewable energy models have been tested. We are also contributors on national and international standards committees and we have directly contributed to the overall national testing standards for Uganda.

Our accreditation by the Ministry of Education and Sports under the Directorate of Industrial Training (DIT) has enabled us to enforce our mandate to carry out competence-based trainings in renewable energy and energy efficiency. We have trained over 600 entities in solar installations, business development, hydro power training, stove design and testing trainings.
